📔 Virtual Memory
If your PC runs low on virtual memory, you can adjust the size using Settings.
On Windows 10, virtual memory, also known as the paging file, is crucial for storing less frequently used data from RAM on the hard drive. This helps prioritize faster memory for common tasks, boosting overall performance and preventing system crashes due to low memory.
The paging file is also vital for creating crash dumps during a system crash, ensuring a complete memory snapshot. While the system can manage the file size automatically, manual adjustments may be needed for better performance or when encountering low virtual memory issues.
If you experience slow performance or receive a "Your system is low on virtual memory" message, you can manually increase virtual memory in Windows 10 through the Settings app or Command Prompt. However, it's essential to exercise caution and make changes only if necessary and with understanding.
To adjust the virtual memory size on Windows 10, use these steps:
Open Settings.
Click on System.
Click on About.
Click the "Advanced system settings" option under the "Related settings" section.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Settings button under the "Performance" section.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Change button under the "Virtual memory" section
Clear the "Automatically manage paging files size for all drives" option.
Select the Custom size option.
Specify the initial and maximum size for the paging file in megabytes.
Click the Set button.
Click the OK button.
Click the OK button again.
Restart your device.
Once you complete the steps, you should notice an increase in performance when navigating Windows 10 as well as when running multiple apps at the same time.
If you need to revert the changes, you can use the same instructions, but on step 10, check the "Automatically manage paging size for all drives" option and restart your device.
